3.2.2010:  On March 1, 2010, the Manhattan Supreme Court ordered Miriam Mercedes Hernandez, a Queens businesswoman, to pay more than $3 million for running an immigration scam.  Hernandez promised dozens of victims she could secure permanent residence for them because she had ties with immigration and elected officials.  She charged as much as $15,000 for each case and none of her cases were successful.   Hernandez has been ordered to pay full restitution to 37 families and more than $2.8million in penalties.
